When book dealer "Freddie the Cur" is murdered at a paperback show, Police Lt. Pfisch is forced to close the con. After all, this is the third untimely death of a show attendee in as many days. First there was Lissa Boaz, called the "Boa Constrictor" for her questionable business practices. Then came Brody Richard "The O-Man" Dameen, the drunken horror writer. What links these victims, other than collectible paperbacks? And why does the identification of the real author of an early Ace gothic even matter?

A comic mystery novel of the modern con scene.

The Paperback Show Murders (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Reginald Robert Armin Wildside Press LLC Books

I remember a time in my youth, when I ran with several people who aspired to be writers, when we all figured how fun it would be to one day be writing published books throughout which we could make veiled or not-so-veiled references to each other and our writing.

Alas, as it turned out, I was the only one of that group who became a writer, therefore it was left up to me to make all the referencing of the others, although not any of their work (never accomplished).

How excited I am, therefore, to have just read THE PAPERBACK SHOW MURDERS by Robert Reginald, my editor at Wildside/Borgo Press, who has managed, as early as Chapter One, to reference my STARSHIP INTERCOURSE pulp novel (I wrote as Lambert Wilhelm). Later there's cryptic reference to a book INCIDENT AT CZYSCIMMIC which I can assume plays off my two "Spies and Lies" series books INCIDENT AT ABERLENE and INCIDENT AT BRIMZINSKY. There's a character Wilhelmina Lamberth (I wrote for Harlequin as Willa Lambert). There's a character Mina "Maltese". There's even reference to "the detailed bibliography of Maltese's triple century of pb works" (Wildside/Borgo having, in real life, published DRAQUALIAN SILK: A COLLECTOR'S AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL GUIDE TO THE BOOKS OF WILLIAM MALTESE 1969-2010).

Quite aside from Ronald having made my "dream come true", he's managed a story of murder within the present-day world of used paperback books that exposes an area of seldom-realized collecting that few people know exist, or can, let alone, guess, so often sees such large amounts of cash being paid for pulp books that were originally only sold for literally pennies.

Particularly entertaining is the way Robert begins each novel with a homage to a genre of pulp novels that is both clever and often thoroughly amusing.

I loved this book on so many levels, it's no wonder I give it a five-star rating and recommend it so highly.

The Paperback Show Murders (Audible Audio Edition) Robert Reginald Robert Armin Wildside Press LLC Books Reviews

Paperback Murders is a fairly short novellete paying tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek homage to old style paperback originals and those who collect them. It is by design a book that probably will appeal to a narrow audience. Each chapter begins with a parody of a classic paperback genre- some of these parodies are more thinly disguised than others. All the action (well, dialogue perhaps rather than swashbuckling action) takes place at a paperback collectors convention. Those who are familiar with all the old publishers will get all the inside references. It is a cute, easy to read spoof of a classic murder mystery. Enjoy.
I actually read this in the print edition, which was tagged as a "Wildside Mystery Double." It includes a Gary Lovisi book on one side, and this book by Robert Reginald, "The Paperback Show Murders," on the other. This review refers onlty to "The Paperback Show Murders."

I've been to small paperback shows a few times but never to the really big ones they have out in California. I've always wanted to go. "The Paperback Show Murders" takes place at a big one. An inscribed copy of a lurid gothic paperback has apparently turned up in one collector's hands and is worth a lot of money to anyone who possesses it. It's worth even more to the author to keep their identity hidden. Murders ensue and there are lots of twists and turns before the final surprising reveal.

I enjoyed this book very much. The mystery itself is rather serious, although there are plenty of light moments, but the author put in an added feature to introduce each chapter. This is an "excerpt" from a particulary bad "hack-work" paperback. These are all made up by the author, although many of the titles and the excerpts themselves are clearly spoofs of existing works and authors. For example, the author has a "Gore" (read Gor) piece that I particularly found hilarious. These spoofs are an absolute delight and add greatly to the reader's enjoyment.

Highly recommended.
