In theological discussions about diversity within Methodist Churches, people usually reference a few standard quotes from John Wesley, particularly his sermon “Catholic Spirit.” However, these references are only a part of the greater whole of Wesley’s theology and his understanding of the mission of the Methodist movement; and hence as part of the issue of Methodist identity and holiness. What's with the version being $39.99 while the print version is $19. This is crazy and a barrier to reading this book.
I greatly appreciated this book. Not only did I find it thorough, well-researched, and well-argued, I also found it to be a spiritually gratifying reminder of the heart of the faith to which we are called. Thank you, Dr. Field, for this offering to the church.
This is truly a valuable and compelling book. Field challenges us to press on toward the inclusiveness rooted in Methodism. Drawn from a thorough study of Wesley as well as from various studies of Wesley's theology, this book is an invitation to gain insight in order to pursue the unity of the church today. In the opening pages, Field makes reference to Jesus's persistent prayer that we be one; we must risk something in order to re-engage with the goal of visible unity. I highly recommend this insightful work.
This excellent resource should be required reading for all Methodist pastors and lay leaders. Truly it was written "for a time such as this." I bought a second copy for my bishop!
David Field has provided what we've been waiting for, for too long - a comprehensive and concise understanding of the practice of unity from John Wesley's writings. Field doesn't compromise by sugar-coating the inconsistencies and tensions between Wesley's theology and praxis, and between his earlier and later writings. Instead, he presents the tensions, offers possible solutions, and asks poignant questions the reader will need to answer based on his/her understanding of what has been illuminated. This is a straightforward and hard-hitting look at how Christians may reconcile their Wesleyan theology and their practice of unity. Every Wesleyan and Methodist student would do well to read this work. But beyond that, Christians who want to grapple with the tension between Christian unity and the proliferation of denominations, division and schism, would do well to let this work speak to them. I feel like this book has been a long time coming and I'm glad to see it finally available. It's a great start! Now we must move forward with the conversation!
